Indonesia has reached a pivotal moment to advance the development of Degummed Palm Mesocarp Oil (DPMO), a refined form of Palm Mesocarp Oil (PMO) that removes proteins and heavy metals from processed palm oil. This innovation aims to position Indonesia not just as the world’s top producer of CPO (Crude Palm Oil) but also as a leader in DPMO production.
Sahat Sinaga, Chairman of the Indonesian Palm Oil Council (DMSI), highlighted that DPMO development represents a rebranding of Indonesian palm oil beyond just raw CPO. “We need to upgrade our farmers. I no longer want just CPO; I want DPMO,” Sahat stated during CNBC Indonesia’s special dialogue event, “Strategies to Enhance the Competitiveness of Indonesian Palm Oil through Downstream Processing” in Jakarta, Thursday (6/6/2024).
According to Sahat, shifting from CPO to DPMO will encourage the production of higher-value palm oil, suitable for various functional products through process innovations. “This innovation retains palm oil’s high natural micronutrient content and maintains low carbon emissions,” he added.
He also explained that new technology within DPMO production could reduce Free Fatty Acids (FFA) in palm oil through re-esterification, a process even accessible to small-scale farmers.
“The goal of this technological innovation is to achieve low carbon emissions, high nutritional value (phytonutrients), oxidation stability, and affordability for smallholder palm oil farmers,” he noted.
“Our expectation is that palm oil farmers will break free from the shadow of protectionist measures by global vegetable oil producers if they operate PO Mills producing DPMO themselves,” Sahat said.
“This innovation will not only change the global perception of our palm products but also unlock broader and more sustainable market opportunities,” he concluded.
